On the verge of madness or how to eat an untold wealth. The most expensive nut and spice
The most expensive nut in the world is macadamia. Once macadamia used to be the main food stuffs for the Australian natives, and now it has become the refined and very useful delicacy.
Only two species of these nuts are cultivated (there are plantations in Australia, Brazil, Southern Africa, in Hawaii and in the south of the USA).
The height of a tree reaches 40 meters, it fructifies till 100 years, however to shell a nut is not an easy task. Because of difficulties with cultivation and “extraction” of a delicacy, no more than 40 tons are produced a year. Cost of one kg of macadamia even in its historical native land exceeds 30 dollars.
The most expensive spice in the world is saffron. The true saffron is stamens of a plant of Crocus sativus. The false saffron is produced of marigold‘s stamens. Stamens are gathered manually, and then are dried up. 225000 stamens are needed to receive half kilogram of a spice. To improve a dish intended for three or five persons, a cook will need no more than six stamens of true saffron.
False saffron is used in essentially more quantities and does not give such aroma. One kg of a true saffron costs about 6 thousand dollars.
